Ablution

Performing ablution in a dream and completing it with careful attention to every detail signifies that one’s needs will be met and matters resolved. Taking a second ablution for prayer when no ritual requirement exists indicates an increase in spiritual illumination. Making ablution with milk or honey reflects debts or financial burdens. Ablution is regarded as a noble act in all revealed faiths, symbolizing protection, mercy, divine safeguarding, and immunity from harm. Taking ablution for prayer represents entering God’s care and being shielded from whatever one fears. It is mentioned in tradition that God Almighty said to Moses, peace be upon him: “When fear overtakes you, perform your ablution and instruct your family to do the same and stand in prayer.” Washing the body in a dream signifies preparing for worship or cleansing oneself from impurities. Taking ablution inside a tunnel or performing a full ritual bath suggests recovering something stolen. Completing ablution and then praying indicates relief from distress and gratitude for divine guidance and protection. If a merchant prays without ablution, it means entering a business venture without capital. For a laborer, it signifies lacking a proper home; for a ruler, it suggests having no supporting soldiers. If a sick person takes ablution while lying in bed, it means separation from a spouse or close companion. Taking ablution inside one’s home points to moving to a new residence. Performing ablution publicly in a street, marketplace, or bathhouse symbolizes scandal, loss, and disgrace. Taking ablution at the seashore or in an appropriate ablution area signifies the removal of fear, grief, or hardship. Making ablution while standing over a friend’s head denotes inheriting him, while seeing a friend perform ablution over one’s own head means suffering harm or scandal caused by that friend. Ablution in a dream also represents the disappearance of fear, recovery from illness, repayment of debts, or sincere repentance. Taking ablution with hot water indicates falling ill. Wanting to perform ablution but being unable to find water or suitable means in a dream signifies failure of a plan or encountering adversity. (Also see Tayammum; Enacting; Prayers; Ritual bath.)

Adultery

(Rape) Committing the forbidden and disgraceful act of adultery in a dream signifies betrayal. If one sees himself committing it, it indicates that he will be unfaithful to his wife. In such dreams, an unfamiliar woman is less harmful than a known one. Adultery may also symbolize theft. If an adulterous woman invites the dreamer to fornicate, it suggests being tempted toward unlawful earnings. Committing adultery with a young, attractive woman means placing one’s wealth in a securely protected place or a concealed chest. If a powerful person commits adultery and then faces divine punishment in the dream, it implies an expansion of his authority. If he is fit for leadership, such a vision means he will be granted it. Sleeping with the wife of a close friend indicates taking some of that friend’s money. Reading the divine ruling regarding punishment for adulterers signals that the dreamer is himself guilty of the act. If one deals with an adulteress or a woman known for adultery, she represents the world and those who pursue its temptations. If a seeker on God’s path—known for piety, good character, and the appearance of a believer—interacts with such a woman in a dream, it means he will join the company of a gnostic and gain wisdom from him. If a man sees a known couple sitting together intimately, it indicates that he desires some worldly benefit from the man. If a man sees himself raping a young woman, it means he hides his savings in an unknown location. If he is caught and punishment is enforced in the dream, it means he will follow the path of knowledge and gain understanding of religious law. Committing adultery with an adulteress signifies severe trials. Entering a brothel and finding oneself unable to leave suggests approaching death. Sleeping with another man’s wife while her husband shows no objection means the husband will entrust him with management of his household. Marrying an adulteress in a dream means that the dreamer himself engages in adultery. (Also see Sexual intercourse)

It may also signify the death of a loved one, the loss of a limb through illness or accident, giving charity on behalf of a departed soul, or settling outstanding debts. Thus, paying zakat may mean increasing wealth, recovery from illness, or freedom from debt—each bringing divine favor and exaltation. Giving zakat on silver symbolizes having a son or getting married. For the poor, giving alms means that God accepts their deeds. Ascent

Climbing a steep incline in a dream signifies striving to achieve success in both worldly and spiritual pursuits, seeking benefits from both realms despite the heavy effort required. An ascent may symbolize a difficult woman or a stern man who can only be approached with gentleness and affection. It can also represent an unreliable associate or business partner unworthy of one’s trust. Likewise, an ascent may reflect the path to salvation, the hazards one must cross, and the deeds that protect against punishment. It can point to trials, hardship, and looming dangers. Ascending a steep slope indicates risk, while descending from it denotes safety. An ascent may further symbolize a bridge, an underpass, a wife, a woman, or even a scorpion. Passing through a steep incline can mean rising in rank through knowledge, good governance, noble conduct, responsible action, or wisdom. Falling down a steep area indicates loss of position, diminished respect, financial setbacks, rejecting truth, turning against religion, or falling into darkness. Climbing always implies reaching one’s aims, whereas climbing flat on one’s back carries unfavorable meaning. Descending from a hill, mountain, ship, or fortress can mean that one’s aspiration will not be fulfilled.

It may also indicate a resolve to marry, good offspring, and receiving guidance after neglect. Writing “In the Name of God” beautifully signifies gaining wealth and esteem in one’s field. If a deceased person writes it, it shows that the departed is embraced by divine mercy. If a living person writes it and then erases it, or if a bird steals it, it foreshadows his approaching death and depletion of worldly provision. Burial

Witnessing oneself interred following death in a dream suggests embarking on an extended voyage marked by financial scarcity. Being laid in the earth while still alive, and recognizing the person doing so, indicates that individual will wrong the dreamer through attack, tyranny, confinement, or unfair treatment. Perishing within the grave after interment foretells possibly succumbing to those afflictions. Enduring and emerging from them promises deliverance from similar threats, captivity, or wrongdoing. Placement in a casket by another signifies relocating to a fresh residence. Heaping soil over the body points to accumulating wealth proportionate to the earth covering it. Burial while alive generally signifies decline in faith or devotion, unless the dreamer emerges unharmed. Stepping forth from the tomb soiled with earth, then brushing it away, reflects a dire condition or faint prospect for sincere atonement. Such live burial can denote incarceration, disdain from others, or harsh retribution serving as a warning to onlookers. Children issuing the adhan indicates that ignorant individuals will govern the region, especially if done at an improper hour. A qualified person delivering the call appropriately implies appointment to rule over a territory as extensive as his voice carries. If unfit for leadership, it means adversaries will multiply. For a trader, it promises expansion in commerce. The adhan heard in a dream may further denote heartfelt supplications and virtuous invocations. Fart

Passing gas in a dream symbolizes indecent speech, hearing or uttering vile and offensive words, or becoming involved in humiliating or unpleasant matters. It may represent adversity, disgrace, foolish behavior, belittling others, lying, or using insulting language. Such a dream can also signify shocking news that disrupts people or causes a gathering to disperse, or it may allude to the sound produced by striking or humiliating someone. If one breaks wind loudly in a dream, it indicates addressing someone with harsh, crude, or hurtful words. If a person sees himself sitting among others and unintentionally passing gas, it signifies that his worries, grief, or pressure will be relieved, though in an embarrassing or distasteful manner. However, if he deliberately breaks wind in a gathering, it denotes committing an evil or shameful act and then suffering the consequences of that behavior. Passing gas without sound in a dream represents receiving sarcastic praise or mockery that matches the offensiveness of the act itself. If one breaks wind while sitting among people who are already distressed, it means their troubles will be lifted and their hardship will ease. If such people are merchants, it indicates that their goods will sell more quickly and their trade will improve. Forcing oneself to break wind in a dream signifies taking on a burden heavier than one can endure. If breaking wind is accompanied by passing gas in the dream, it may indicate success, honor, and profit gained from an important journey or business venture. If a person breaks an obligatory fast out of forgetfulness, it signifies receiving a pleasant gift or lawful money. In general, fasting in a dream denotes honor, elevation in rank, repentance from sins, settling debts, penitence for wrongdoing, or the birth of a son. Observing the obligatory fast of the blessed month of Ramadan in a dream signifies gaining clarity in matters of doubt, recognizing truth without distortion, and attaining correct understanding. If someone sees himself as the only person fasting in the dream, and he is illiterate, it means he will memorize the Holy Qur’an, achieve spiritual growth, and receive glad tidings. Such a dream also indicates piety and religious devotion. If the dreamer is sick, it means recovery; if heedless, it means divine guidance; and if indebted, it means he will repay what he owes. Intentionally breaking the obligatory fast of Ramadan in a dream signifies committing a grave sin and may symbolically represent killing someone. Likewise, seeing oneself killing another person in a dream may indicate deliberately breaking the obligatory fast. Observing the two months of atonement for breaking the fast of Ramadan or for other expiations in a dream signifies falling ill and then repenting sincerely to God Almighty. Deliberately breaking the Ramadan fast also represents neglecting one of the pillars of Islam. If the dreamer then acknowledges this neglect and vows to fulfill his duties, it means he will soon receive an unexpected gift. Recognizing the sanctity of Ramadan in a dream shows that the dreamer is on the straight path, while not fasting may indicate travel. Voluntary fasting in a dream signifies protection from enemies. If a sick person sees himself fasting, it may indicate death, silence, celebration, or recovery, and it also reflects sincerity of faith and truthfulness in word and deed. Fasting on the day pilgrims stand at Mount Arafat signifies acceptance of charity. Fasting the last ten days of Zul-Hijjah indicates a blessed end to one’s life, righteousness, or fulfillment of a promise. Fasting the day of Ashura represents good deeds, trials followed by deliverance, living to witness another religious festival, or, if one’s wife is pregnant, the birth of a blessed and righteous son. Fasting an extra day out of doubt regarding religious duty indicates sin, negligence, or lack of certainty in devotion. Making up missed Ramadan fasts for valid reasons signifies the release of a prisoner or repentance of a sinner. Observing a vowed fast for a specific purpose signifies attaining one’s goal, joy, and happiness. A perpetual vowed fast indicates bearing a heavy responsibility, following innovation, living in isolation, or practicing silence, for fasting in a dream also symbolizes restraint of speech. If a soldier sees himself engaged in battle in a dream, it signifies benefit, honor, and success, as well as a rewarding outcome for his efforts. Fighting against unjust or oppressive people in a dream represents victory over wrongdoing, standing up for truth, fulfilling one’s duties toward one’s parents, or showing protection and loyalty toward one’s spouse. Fighting in the streets symbolizes aligning oneself with heedless or misguided people, or deviating from the straight path. If one sees himself wrestled to the ground in a dream, it indicates loss of wealth or resources. However, paradoxically, the one who is defeated in the dream may ultimately prevail in waking life, while the apparent winner in the dream may suffer loss or failure. If the fight has witnesses, or if the winner is better prepared or fighting for survival or sustenance—such as a struggle between a human and a beast—then the dream’s outcome may reflect the real outcome in wakefulness. If two friends are seen wrestling, the one who loses in the dream will hold higher rank, respect, or advantage in real life. Wrestling in a dream may also indicate illness that affects the loser, or consequences following a sickness. Battling a wild beast and killing it in a dream signifies relief from hardships, overcoming trials, and the removal of sorrow and distress. If the hunt is for animals unlawful for food, the dream indicates suffering, distress, and the consequences of involvement in forbidden or immoral actions. Hunting a lion in a dream signifies the acquisition of great power or authority, often attained through cunning, deception, or strategic manipulation. Hunting sparrows, hawks, or falcons also indicates gaining power, dominance, or influence, particularly over others. Hunting birds or pigeons represents a tricky or deceptive merchant who uses cleverness and persuasion in trade. Hunting wild beasts symbolizes cheating or exploiting travelers and strangers, warning against taking advantage of those who are vulnerable or unfamiliar with their surroundings. Fishing, when emphasized repeatedly in a dream, reinforces the meaning of womanizing and indulgence in desire, pointing to a persistent pattern of pursuit and temptation. A beast hunter in a dream represents someone who exploits foreigners or outsiders, while a bird hunter may also symbolize a schoolteacher, a music teacher, or a preacher, someone who attracts, guides, or influences people through speech, teaching, or charm, sometimes using persuasion or subtle control. Sale

If one dreams of being sold as a captive in a slave market, it signifies honor when the purchaser is a woman, and trials when the buyer is a man. The greater the price fetched at auction, the more favorable or adverse one's fortune becomes. In the vision, the more the buyer loses, the better for the one sold, and conversely. There is a distinction between being auctioned and being sold; auctioning portends harm. To sell is to relinquish. In a dream, the buyer and seller exchange roles. Selling implies ascribing worth and merit to goods. If the item sold is worldly, then preference is given to one's rewards in the afterlife. Selling also denotes swapping one state for another. Bartering in a dream, however, means exchanging the usefulness of items or partaking in them. For instance, trading something worthless for something valuable, if the dreamer is a fighter, signifies dying a martyr. Selling a free person indicates a shift in authority and arriving at a commendable outcome, as occurred in the tale of Joseph, son of Jacob, peace be upon them both.

It may also signify the loss of wealth, squandering of capital, or divorcing one’s wife. Shaving one’s hair in a dream is closely connected to a person’s customs, habits, and condition in waking life. If one is accustomed to keeping his hair short and sees himself shaving his head in a dream, it signifies paying a fine, offering an atonement, or settling an obligation. Seeing one’s head shaved during the summer—when one is used to doing so—indicates benefit, comfort, relief, and recovery from ailments such as migraines or physical distress. However, shaving one’s head during the winter signifies hardship, adversity, penalties, or illness. Shaving the head in a dream may also symbolize paying one’s dues, calming fears, and achieving success after anxiety. Shortening one’s hair likewise signifies the appeasement of fear and easing of worry. If a person suffering from depression sees his head shaved, it indicates the end of distress, repayment of debts, or release from burden. At the same time, such a vision may also signify abasement, humiliation, deception, or even death, depending on the dreamer’s circumstances. If a soldier sees his head shaved in a dream, it signifies the loss of strength, authority, or esteem. Seeing oneself chipping or cutting hair in uneven bits indicates the loss of people’s respect and a decline in reputation. Shaving one’s head for someone who does not usually do so may indicate affliction, illness, or an unwelcome trial. If she sees her husband giving her a beautiful haircut while speaking affectionately, it signifies spiritual growth, fulfillment of a trust, or the repayment of debts. Trimming a woman’s hair in a dream may also signify the inability to conceive children. Cutting one’s hair in a dream signifies the loss of strength or vitality. Shaving half of one’s beard indicates losing one’s livelihood and dignity. Speaking

(Hearing, Tongue, Listening, Conversation, Utterances) Speaking various languages in a vision denotes affluence. The utterances of a departed person are invariably truthful. The same applies to birds speaking, and their speech heralds good news, prosperity, knowledge, and comprehension. If an animal converses with someone or says, "I dreamed that...," but then does not recount the dream, it foretells a quarrel, a battle, losses, or a dispute. If a dog, leopard, or falcon speaks and relates a dream, it heralds joyful news, substantial earnings, advantages, and happiness. Generally, birds addressing humans denote benefits and advancement in status. If a serpent speaks softly to someone, it means receiving gains from an adversary. If a wild beast speaks, it portends their death. If one's head or nose addresses him, it means the person represented by that body part (see Body) will face a misfortune. If a tree speaks, it means deriving benefit from that line of thought. A talking tree may also signify a conflict or the end of one's banishment, or it could denote elevation. Whatever an infant says is true, but it may also signify falling into error. If a devout and spiritual person hears an infant speak to him, it means he will witness marvels or a miraculous sign, or become witness to an astonishing pact. The speech of inanimate objects always conveys goodness, offers a moral, or gives counsel. Animal speech also represents retribution and distress. The talk of one's limbs denotes difficulties from kinfolk, or it may signify transgression. The speech of shifting shadows denotes summoning jinn or malevolent spirits. Being controlled by such spirits and speaking on their behalf signifies enticement, trouble, corruption, and wickedness. Animal speech denotes inclining toward friendships and finding solace in the company of the pious, or it could mean laboring to earn one's sustenance. If a wall speaks, it warns of separation, or abandoning the city to dwell in the wilderness, near desolate ruins, or a burial ground. Hearing a voice commanding one to act heralds glad tidings. Hearing God Almighty on the Day of Judgment denotes ascension in rank, performing righteous deeds, and nearness to one's Lord. Swimming

Swimming in a dream generally symbolizes involvement with authority, struggle, trials, or major undertakings, and its interpretation varies according to the dreamer’s condition and the manner of swimming. If a man of knowledge sees himself swimming in the ocean, it signifies that he will reach his goals and attain what he seeks in knowledge or status. However, if he enters the sea and then returns to the shore, it indicates that he will begin the pursuit of knowledge but later abandon it. Swimming in a dream may also represent imprisonment. Successfully entering waters and swimming with ease denotes undertaking a major enterprise, leading an important task, or acquiring authority and power. Swimming on one’s back symbolizes repentance from sin. Swimming in stagnant sea water indicates serving someone in authority whose service brings nothing but distress and anger. Transformation

Transformation in a dream refers to substitution, where one form or state is changed into another. If a dry or withered tree turns into a green and blossoming one in a dream, it signifies political change, shifts in worldly affairs, or a reversal of conditions—either from hardship to ease or from ease to hardship. This category includes transformations of inner essence as well as outward physical form. For example, if a young person sees himself as an old man in a dream, it indicates spiritual advancement, maturity, and the attainment of honor. Conversely, if an elderly person sees himself as a young boy, it signifies indulgence in wrongdoing or foolish behavior. If one sees a known old person regain youth in a dream, it suggests a major change in the dreamer’s material circumstances—either improvement or decline, such as wealth turning into poverty or poverty into wealth. Wrestling

Seeing oneself engaged in wrestling in a dream symbolizes conflict, rivalry, and trials in one’s waking life. If a person sees himself being thrown to the ground, it indicates a possible loss of wealth, status, or material means. Yet paradoxically, the one who appears defeated in the dream will ultimately prevail in reality, for in such dreams the apparent winner is often the true loser in wakefulness, and the apparent loser is the eventual victor. If the wrestling match occurs in the presence of a witness, this may reverse the interpretation, meaning that the winner in the dream could also be the winner in real life. The same applies if the dreamer demonstrates greater readiness, strength, or necessity, such as fighting for survival or sustenance—like the struggle between a human being and a wild beast. When two friends are seen wrestling, the one who loses in the dream will enjoy greater standing, dignity, or advantage in waking life. Wrestling in a dream may also symbolize illness or physical weakness, particularly affecting the one who loses, or it may represent the aftereffects and consequences of a sickness already endured. If a person sees himself fighting a beast and killing it, this signifies relief from hardship, the removal of distress, and the end of sorrow, anxiety, and suffering. Should the dreamer find himself reaching the point of death during the struggle, it indicates that he will overcome his enemies decisively, emerging victorious after enduring extreme hardship or danger. Write

(Jotting, Scribbling, Recording) Writing in a dream generally symbolizes deception, stratagems, or hidden schemes, and it often points to subtle manipulation or calculated planning. A writer seen in a dream represents a clever yet deceitful individual, someone skilled in misleading others through words or appearances. If one’s handwriting appears unclear, ugly, or illegible, it signifies repentance from dishonesty, abandoning fraud, and regret over deceiving people in the past. Writing on a scroll, parchment, or legal pad in a dream indicates that the dreamer may receive an inheritance or gain wealth from a formal or legal source. Writing in a notebook, however, symbolizes evasion, denial, or an attempt to avoid responsibility. Writing a book or a novel in a dream may signify unlawful or suspicious earnings, or it may indicate illness or physical weakness, especially if the writing is burdensome or exhausting. If one sees himself writing a book or a letter and completing it, this represents success in finishing an undertaking, achieving objectives, and bringing a planned matter to completion. If the writing remains unfinished, it means that obstacles, delays, or external interference will prevent the completion of an important project. Writing with the left hand in a dream signifies deviance, reprehensible conduct, or straying from what is right. It may also allude to immoral behavior, the birth of a child through illicit relations, or, in some interpretations, becoming a poet, since poetry may involve imaginative but misleading expression. Signing a deed, contract, or check in a dream indicates failure to honor a promise or fulfill an agreement. If the dreamer sees someone he knows drafting a contract between them, it warns that this person may deceive him, manipulate him in business, or lead him astray through false assurances. If one finds himself illiterate and unable to write in a dream, it reflects inner distress, sadness, and depression, though it also carries glad tidings that God Almighty will open a way out of hardship. If an illiterate person sees himself learning to read and write, it suggests that he will benefit from something he long feared, or that he may endure difficult trials that ultimately bring insight or gain. If a learned or educated person sees himself incapable of writing, it indicates anxiety, fear, exhaustion, and obstruction in his livelihood or affairs, signifying a temporary blockage of ability, clarity, or opportunity. Zikr

(Hymns, Remembrance of God, Supplications, Songs of Divine Love) Seeing oneself in a dream engaged in the remembrance of God Almighty (zikr)—such as participating in a circle of people invoking His Most Beautiful Names, praising His Divine Attributes, reciting the Qur’an, offering supplications, or chanting devotional hymns—signifies that the place where this remembrance occurs will become a site of blessing and sanctity, a location dedicated to the glorification and worship of God. The degree of goodness, purity, and blessing attached to that place corresponds to the quality of recitation, sincerity, humility, and devotion witnessed in the dream. If the zikr takes the form of ascetic or spiritually uplifting songs, it indicates that one’s religious authority, stewardship, or moral responsibility is rightly established and sound. However, if the dream involves sensual or worldly love songs, it points to temptations, distractions, and spiritual trials that may lead one away from sincerity and restraint. Seeing oneself repeatedly calling upon the Name of God in a dream signifies victory over enemies, whether they be external adversaries or inner struggles such as desires, fears, or doubts. Calling people to God, reminding them of His Attributes, and exhorting them to righteousness in a dream represents the role of a preacher or guide—one who warns, advises, and leads others toward safety, helping them distance themselves from sin and its harmful consequences. If a merchant sees himself invoking God’s Beautiful Names in a dream, it means that his business will be protected, and that he will be saved from loss, ruin, or bankruptcy through divine favor. If a disbeliever, irreligious, or secular person sees himself remembering God and invoking His sacred Attributes in a dream, it may indicate that he will face illness or severe trials. Yet inwardly, his heart will be turning to God in supplication, seeking mercy and relief. Although he may conceal his faith outwardly—out of fear of mockery or social pressure—his inner state will remain attached to divine hope. If, during such a dream, the person utters words of truth, wisdom, or sincere counsel, it means that he will recover from his affliction, overcome adversity, and be cured of illness. Moreover, he will move toward a more stable and compassionate life, marked by charity, good deeds, guidance, and illumination, and faith will gradually settle firmly in his heart. However, if one recites prayers with a mocking tone, affected twang, or insincerity, it indicates that he will remain trapped in hardship for a prolonged time, and that people may ridicule or belittle him, reflecting inner confusion and lack of humility. (Also see Supplications)
