When a righteous and Godfearing person applies kohl to another’s eyes, it represents blessings, guidance, and spiritual illumination. Smearing one’s own eyes with kohl points to increased religiosity, sound faith, and improvement in devotion, while for a blind person it heralds miraculous healing and restoration of sight. Using antimony or a silver-white powder signifies marriage to two women, whereas coating the eyelids with butter or similar substances indicates pursuit of unlawful or immoral relationships. Beautifying children’s eyes with anything other than proper kohl or antimony reflects grave wrongdoing and moral corruption. Applying kohl as medicine symbolizes correcting one’s religious practice and dedicating life to a righteous cause, while using it purely for adornment signifies striving for worldly success, status, or promotion.
