Islamic Interpretation
In a dream, the Holy Book or the Qur’an symbolizes a king, ruler, or judge who governs according to Islamic law and jurisprudence. If a king, ruler, or judge sees that the Holy Book has vanished, is burned, or its words are washed away, it signifies his death. When a ruler or governor sees himself writing a copy of the Holy Book by hand, it indicates that he is just and that he bases his judgments on divine law. If a judge sees himself handwriting a copy of the Holy Book, it suggests that he withholds his knowledge and is overly bold or proud of his rank and position. If a religious scholar or theologian sees himself copying the Holy Book, it means that he will gain profit from a business transaction. If a king or ruler sees himself swallowing the Holy Book, it indicates that his death may be near. If a judge swallows the Holy Book, it means that he accepts bribes. When a ruler sees himself erasing what is written in the Holy Book, it means exile, and if a judge erases it, it signifies his death. If the erasing is done by licking it with the tongue, it denotes committing a grave sin, while if a witness erases it, it means that he will deny his testimony. Carrying the Holy Book or purchasing a copy of the Qur’an in a dream means living according to its standards and guidance. Reading from the Holy Book before God’s Prophet, peace be upon him, signifies committing oneself to memorizing it. Eating the pages of the Holy Book means accepting bribes, though if a common person eats its pages or some lines, it means earning a livelihood through reciting or teaching the Qur’an, or through copying and selling it. Seeing the Holy Book also signifies an increase in wisdom. Writing copies of the Holy Book represents piety, or it may symbolize a scholar who lives by its teachings, acts upon its commands, and shares knowledge with others. Tearing out its pages signifies ingratitude toward God’s revelations, denial of His favors, or doubt about them. If one behaves toward the Holy Book in a way he would detest while awake, it means loss of faith and religious devotion. Carrying a copy of the Holy Book signifies gaining authority and knowledge. The Holy Book may also represent a spouse, a child, or wealth. For a sick person, seeing it means recovery, and for one facing an enemy, it means victory. For a sinner, it indicates repentance and return to God, or possibly receiving an inheritance. If one follows innovations and recognizes this in the dream, it serves as a divine warning. Seeing the Holy Book may also mean witnessing wonders, miracles, hearing news, receiving glad tidings, or enjoying a long life if one browses through it completely. It can also represent gardens, paradise, places of worship, or a person who must be obeyed, such as a ruler, parents, a teacher, or a shaikh, and it may signify a truthful oath, good news, admonition, or warning. Seeing the Holy Book or earlier divine scriptures indicates presiding over people. Carrying the Holy Book or any revealed scripture and finding its pages blank when opened means pretending to be something one is not, impersonating a scholar, or feigning religiosity. Kissing the Holy Book signifies reverence for its contents and adherence to its commands. Seeing its lines crooked means contentment with one’s provision and fulfillment of obligatory duties. Stealing and hiding a copy of the Holy Book signifies cheating in prayer or neglecting its proper performance. Looking into the Holy Book and then writing what one reads onto one’s clothing means interpreting the Qur’an according to personal desires. Seeing the Holy Book resting on one’s lap and a chick picking up all its words signifies having a child who will memorize the Qur’an, benefit from the father’s piety, and find strength, lawful earnings, and trust through it. Buying a copy of the Holy Book signifies benefit, prosperity, and becoming a well-known and distinguished religious scholar. If the Holy Book is taken forcefully from someone’s hands, it means loss of knowledge or employment. Spreading its pages on a flat surface means seeking wisdom and obtaining it, or possibly receiving an inheritance. Placing the Holy Book on one’s shoulders signifies receiving an appointment, being entrusted with responsibility, or memorizing the Qur’an. Trying to eat the pages of the Holy Book means being a constant reader of the Qur’an, while trying but failing to eat them signifies attempting to memorize it but repeatedly forgetting what one learns.
