A person’s garments in a dream reflect his hidden thoughts and intentions, which will sooner or later become visible in his conduct and character. Pure thoughts appear as pure attire; corrupt thoughts manifest as corrupt attire. Wearing a slipper on the head and a turban on the foot foretells calamity and confusion. Each kind of garment, according to its name and nature, can symbolize either a man or a woman. A new garment in a dream is far better than an old, worn one. A man dressed in women’s clothing signifies that he remains unmarried; a woman in men’s clothing means she is still single. A tightly fastened shirt points to hardship, the return of an absent traveler, or marriage for the unmarried. Fine, dignified clothing denotes respect and high standing. A soldier’s uniform indicates war; a scholar’s robe means pursuit of knowledge; an ascetic’s coarse woollen cloak signifies renunciation of the world; a salesman’s suit means toil and seeking employment. White garments represent pride and honour. Silk signifies power and elevation in commerce or government. A deceased person seen in silken attire dwells in paradise. Gold-embroidered clothing announces triumph over enemies. Black clothing symbolizes authority, sovereignty, and mastery over others. Green clothing indicates martyrdom. Cotton clothing means following the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Woollen clothing brings clarity and insight, unless it is rough and unsuitable, in which case it means poverty and disgrace. Linen clothing signifies divine favour and blessing. Brocaded cloth heralds an important message, rise in rank, wealth, or the joy of children. A robe dragging on the ground warns of rebellion and disobedience; a coat of moderate length promises purity and moral excellence. Any garment reflects the qualities of the people who normally wear it, or captivity in war. Wearing a prayer cap or traditional head-covering means expiation of sins. A long flowing cloak or jubbah foretells long life. An open casual jacket signifies ease and financial gain. Special festive attire means prosperity stored for one’s offspring or fresh merchandise for one’s business. A military uniform predicts distress or scholarly controversy.
