Islamic Interpretation
A grave in a dream symbolizes a prison, just as a prison may represent a grave. Living inside a grave means imprisonment. Building a grave signifies building a house, while entering a grave without witnessing a funeral indicates purchasing a home. Digging a grave points to marriage achieved through deception. Standing over a grave means committing sin. If one digs a grave and finds it standing above ground without walls, it represents the abode of the Hereafter; entering it means one’s worldly life has ended, while not entering it carries no consequence. A known grave confirms truth and inevitable outcomes, whereas an unknown grave represents a hypocrite. Building a tomb on the roof of one’s house signifies long life. Visiting graves means visiting prisoners. Rain falling upon graves denotes divine mercy upon the deceased. Graves may also symbolize travel, confusion, a wife, or imprisonment. Filling a grave with soil means longevity and good health. Being buried alive indicates calamity, restriction, or incarceration, and being buried alive while shrouded may also mean marriage. Exhuming a grave means pursuing the deceased person’s occupation; if he was a scholar, it signifies seeking his knowledge, and if wealthy, it means gaining wealth or inheritance. Seeing the dead person alive in his grave means unlawful earnings, whereas seeking knowledge from a deceased scholar whose grave remains closed means true wisdom. A stone tomb or sarcophagus signifies profit, captives of war, spoils, or exposing secrets. (Also see Burial, Cemetery, Exhume, Sarcophagus, Shrine, Tower)
