A dry, withered, or lifeless palm tree represents hypocrisy, inner emptiness, or a person whose outward appearance conceals a lack of sincerity. Cutting down a palm tree indicates the death or loss of a learned and respected person, while uprooting a palm tree warns of severe trials such as the outbreak of disease, oppression by a tyrannical ruler, disruption of plans, or the rise of discord and conflict. A palm tree may also symbolize close family ties, such as a paternal aunt, and collectively palm trees can represent Arab women or a community bound by tradition. Seeing a young sapling grow into a tall palm tree signifies the rise of a child who will become a great scholar, or the strengthening of a weak or overlooked person. In a broader sense, a palm tree may represent long life, knowledge, teaching, children, a spouse, a home, property, authority, the passing of a year, new garments, wealth, or childbirth, while pruning or trimming a palm tree signifies relief after hardship, ease following labor or travel, and the removal of burdens that hinder progress.
